WHAT is this blue stuff I hear you ask?

This is jewellers wax, a carve-able material used to achieve three dimensional items which may not be achieved with other traditional techniques.

It is used in a process called lost wax casting that has been used for 1000s of years to create jewellery and sculptures.

Here’s how it works:

- create a wax model
- encase that in a mold or investment
- the wax is melted away
- molten metal is poured in to fill the space and create a detailed replica of the original model

It’s a lengthy process but you can achieve some cool results! All of the rings you see in the video are now ready for casting and I can’t wait to show you them!

I’ve had this cute pink sapphire for a while but unfortunately it has a slight black blemish on the surface so Ive never used it. I had a play around with some scrap silver and with no plan in mind created this ring!

These little silver Sixpence coins have been buried underground for years and were discovered with a metal detector! It was my task to create a home for these treasures to be worn and enjoyed.

Up until 1947 these coins were made from solid silver. What a lovely way to display them as opposed to tucked away in a draw to be forgotten once again.

HALLMARKS- what are they and what to they mean??

I just received some of my jewellery back from the London Assay Office and thought it would be a nice opportunity to shed some light onto what those little marks are on your precious jewellery.

By law in the UK, any precious metal pieces to be sold or traded have to be hallmarked. However, items below 1.0g of gold, below 7.78g for silver and below 0.5g for platinum are exempt.

So what do all those little marks mean?

First off we have the sponsors mark. This is a personal mark that you can trace back to the maker of the item. Mine, as you can see, is <CRM> for my name.

Next up we have the metal fineness. These two marks tell you what the metal is (silver,gold ect.) and how many parts pure precious metal it is. This is because most items are made from alloys (a mix of metals). There will be a symbol, in this case a Crown for gold, then a number which tells us what percentage of is it pure gold - in this case it is 9ct gold which is 375 parts per 1000 or 37.5%.

Why use different alloys?

Pure gold is very expensive and also not very usable as it’s a relatively soft metal. Mixing it with other metals gives it durability and also lowers the cost.

The next mark is where the item was hallmarked. In London they use a Leopards Head.

Finally there is a single letter which corresponds to the year it was made. When the full alphabet has run its course, they change the font and start again.

That is it for the traditional UK hallmark but there are many more!

We used some inherited gold and incorporated the stars seen in the original ring from the first video. Such a cute idea and a lovely nod to the sentimental ring.

The ring is faceted like the rest of the set and left matte.

Creating a pair of wedding rings to go either side of an engagement ring I made previously.

Using the customers own gold, I melted it down and started processing it into wire. It’s a lengthy process but I have my new rolling mill on my side!

It took me a while to work out a process to get that nice curved but pointy shape but I’m happy with how it turned out. I think they sit so beautifully as a set but also on their own too.

I finished them off with a faceted matte finish to match the engagement ring.

I will be sharing the process of the matching male ring soon.

Having a proper rolling mill like this opens up more ways for me to create and make my own precious metal sheet/wire from scraps or heirloom jewellery.
